Klasycyzm styl odwołujący się do osiągnięć starożytnych Greków i Rzymian. W europie klasycyzm pojawił się w okresie renesansu. Istotą klasycyzmu była chęć wiernego odwzorowania elementów pracy, statyka zamiast dynamizmu, oszczędność wyrazu, spokój, uwypuklenie cnót obywatelskich, idealizowanie postaci, dominanta kształty nad barwą,używanie silnego strumienia światła - rozświetlenia. Tematyką prac ukazywała momenty przed doniosłymi wydarzeniami, była moralizatorska. Często był to również akt. W malarstwie stosowano kontur, chłodne kolory, gładką fakturę i miękki światłocień.
